The UCSF Bakar Ear and Hearing Institute will create a new home for integrated hearing and balance care, research, education, and innovation at UCSF Mission Bay.

Approved by the University of California Board of Regents in May 2026, the project will consolidate clinical services, surgery, imaging, vestibular testing, rehabilitation, and research programs into a single purpose-built facility designed to improve patient care and advance hearing science.

The building is designed to foster collaboration between clinicians and researchers working to better understand hearing, communication, cognition, and neurological disease.

Located along Fifth Street between Nelson Rising Lane and Mission Bay Boulevard South on the Mission Bay campus, the newly constructed building will be five floors and approximately 150,000 square feet. The facility is expected to include:

  • Outpatient clinics
  • Audiology and hearing testing
  • Vestibular and balance testing
  • Surgical suites and procedure spaces
  • Imaging and diagnostic services
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation
  • Research laboratories
  • Education and collaboration spaces
