Construction is underway for the UCSF Life Sciences Building in the Dogpatch neighborhood at the historic Power Station site, just blocks south of UCSF Mission Bay. The facility represents a major expansion of UCSF’s leadership in patient care, research, and innovation, integrating advanced cancer treatment, clinical services, and life sciences incubation to accelerate discovery and improve patient outcomes.
The building will anchor a larger redevelopment of the Dogpatch waterfront, led by master developer Fifth Space, which will also include new housing, commercial space, a hotel, and public parks, creating a vibrant new destination for the neighborhood.
Designed by Herzog & de Meuron in partnership with Stantec, Hitachi, Bakar Labs, and with Webcor as the general contractor, the 300,000 gross-square-foot building will feature:
- Proton therapy for advanced cancer care
- Multi-specialty clinics that expand patient access to care
- Life sciences incubator space to foster discovery and innovation
UCSF’s new facility will expand access to advanced cancer care while anchoring clinical, research, and entrepreneurial activity in the growing Dogpatch neighborhood.
The center will provide critical capacity for UCSF Health’s cancer programs, including three gantries for precise proton therapy delivery, essential for both pediatric and adult patients. It will also support expanded access to infusion, imaging, and specialty care for patients traveling from the Peninsula and South Bay.
Sustainability is central to the project’s design. The facility is targeting LEED Gold certification, with extensive glazing on its upper floors to reduce energy use while maximizing natural light and creating an open, welcoming environment for all.
