The UCSF Mission Bay Education Center and Dental Clinics (ECDC) will transform 409 Illinois Street into a modern center that integrates education and care, supports student success, and fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration.
The interior renovation project will create space for a new education center where students from dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy and physical therapy will learn together, and for patients to access advanced dental care at the UCSF Dental Center, operated by the UCSF School of Dentistry.
Designed to create future-ready environments and support contemporary teaching, the UCSF Education Center will include flexible classrooms and academic support spaces, physical therapy learning environments, and an Experiential Learning and Simulation Center. The Center is an expansion of UCSF learning spaces to encourage interprofessional collaboration.
The Dental Center space will establish a new clinical home for the School of Dentistry, housing patient-centered clinics for advanced oral healthcare and learner-focused clinical education spaces. Shared amenities will include collaborative work areas, gathering spaces, and grab-and-go food service.
The project is an interior renovation of the existing building at 409 Illinois Street and will include full interior demolition and replacement of HVAC and electrical systems.
The project will be designed with sustainability, accessibility, and long-term flexibility in mind, with a goal of meeting or exceeding LEED Gold standards.
The approximately 261,000-square-foot, six-story building was originally completed in 2008, outfitted as a laboratory and office facility. UCSF announced the purchase of 409 Illinois in December 2025.
Construction Start
- Fall 2026
- Initial demolition is scheduled to begin in fall 2026, followed by the primary construction phase in 2027.
Expected Project Completion
- Spring 2029
- Activation and move-in are anticipated in early 2029, with move-in currently scheduled for spring 2029.
