Construction is underway for the UCSF Barbara and Gerson Bakar Research and Academic Building, previously known as the Parnassus Research and Academic Building, a state-of-the-art building that will create a vital collaborative space that drives innovations in scientific research and education. The Bakar Research and Academic Building (BRAB) will house research programs for cancer, microbiology, diabetes, immunology and cell biology.
The building will be home to such key projects as the Benioff Center for Microbiome Medicine, iMicro, Bakar ImmunoX and CoLabs, connecting some of the most innovative researchers to collaborate on new discoveries.
To further create a collaborative space with colleagues in other disciplines, the School of Nursing will relocate to PRAB, occupying a floor of the 325,000-square-foot, nine-story building. In addition, the building will serve as temporary space for research and academic groups as the campus undergoes several major improvements for the Comprehensive Parnassus Heights Plan through 2030.
Demolition of UC Hall on Parnassus Avenue for BRAB was complete in fall 2023.
