Helen Diller Hospital Construction Advances with Safety Improvements and Upcoming Milestones
Construction at the UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital (HDH) continues to move steadily forward as the project nears completion of foundation work and prepares to begin structural steel installation early in the new year. Several highly visible safety and roadway improvements are also underway to support increased construction activity.
A key upcoming activity is the installation of debris netting over Medical Center Way, scheduled to begin later this month and remain in place for several months as work progresses adjacent to the roadway. Additionally, roadway improvements along Medical Center Way are nearing completion, with work expected to be completed by the end of January, although some activities may extend beyond this timeframe if necessary.
The project recently opened a new pedestrian sidewalk on Medical Center Way, providing a safer and more direct route for the UCSF community and public as site conditions continue to evolve.
Impacts and Mitigations | HDH Project
Early morning concrete pours are continuing in January 2026. Pours are scheduled to continue on January 28 and 30, 2026. After January, early-morning concrete pours will pause for several months for the HDH project before the next phase begins. Dates and details are subject to change.
Now through January 2026: Expect a reduced lane along Parnassus Avenue near the HDH construction site from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and on Saturdays when needed. The lane reduction will not affect eastbound or westbound traffic on Parnassus Avenue. Traffic cones will mark the area where the lane will be reduced, and flaggers will be in place to assist with traffic control.
Medical Center Way remains closed on weekends to support construction, and the Parnassus Central Utilities Plant (PCUP) loading dock will be blocked. Single-lane closures on Medical Center Way are ongoing during the week.
Steel deliveries will be along Parnassus Avenue, and other construction activities are expected to impact Medical Center Way throughout 2026.
Project teams remain in close coordination with clinical and research units to minimize operational impacts and maintain safety.
Construction hours for this project include "noisy" work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

Parnassus Central Campus Site Improvements
UCSF is embarking on an important endeavor to create a welcoming space that will lead to the “heart of campus” at Parnassus Heights. The Parnassus Central Campus Site Improvements (PCCSI) program, also known as Parnassus Commons, will provide extensive site improvements in the central core of the Parnassus Heights campus, where the School of Nursing building is currently under demolition. The project is expected to be completed in 2027.
Demolition of the former School of Nursing building is underway as part of the Parnassus Central Campus Site Improvements (PCCSI) project, clearing the site for campus improvements.
School of Nursing Building Demolition Progresses to Lower Levels for Parnassus Commons Project
Work continues on the Parnassus Commons project, also known as the Parnassus Central Campus Site Improvements (PCCSI) project, as demolition of the former seven-floor School of Nursing (SON) building advances floor by floor. Crews reached the fourth-floor slab in January 2026. Demolition activity is expected to be completed in January 2026.
As demolition approaches lower levels in the SON building, larger high-reach equipment will be required to dismantle and demolish the elevator and stair shaft. Crews are using hand tools for structure separation wherever feasible to help moderate noise transmission and have begun using more powerful robotic demolition equipment to cut and separate rebar from concrete more effectively. The work is sequenced to maintain safety and minimize disruption where possible.
As demolition continues, regular hauling activity from Koret Way and Kirkham Street will persist over the coming weeks as debris is removed from the site.
Noise and vibration are expected to impact the following buildings:
Clinical Sciences Building (CSB)
Health Sciences East and West (HSE and HSW)
Ray and Dagmar Dolby Regeneration Medicine Building (IRM)
Medical Sciences Building (MSB)
Koret Hall (Koret Vision Center)
And possibly other nearby buildings adjacent to Saunders Court.
