UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital
To serve the city with world-class care for the next century, UCSF is constructing the UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital (HDH). The 15-story hospital at the Parnassus Heights campus is under construction with completion expected by 2029, followed by activation and first patient in 2030.
Construction crews install reinforcing steel and structural anchor bolts for the final pier cap at the Helen Diller Hospital construction site at UCSF Parnassus Heights.
Structural Steel Deliveries and Safety Net Testing Planned
Construction activities for the UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital (HDH) project continue to progress as the team prepares for the next phase of structural work. In late March and early April 2026, large structural steel columns will begin arriving on site. These columns — each weighing approximately 80,000 to 90,000 pounds — are being manufactured in Guadalajara, Mexico, and will be installed in both interior and exterior portions of the hospital’s structural framework. Approximately 12 columns will be delivered and installed over the coming weeks.
Structural steel installation for HDH is scheduled to begin in April 2026, with deliveries arriving in advance of construction. Because on-site laydown space is unavailable, steel will be offloaded onto Medical Center Way and hoisted directly into place for installation. Flaggers will manage traffic and ensure safe circulation, and deliveries will be carefully coordinated to minimize traffic disruptions.
Other ongoing construction activities include foundation work. Early-morning concrete pours for foundation work are scheduled to start at 1 a.m. Saturday, March 21, and 4 a.m. March 20, 24, 30, and April 2; and 4 a.m. April 23.
Dates and details are subject to change.
Weekend construction activity will continue along Medical Center Way, with closures on Saturdays and Sundays anticipated through the duration of major construction.
The project remains on track toward a topping-off milestone in 2027.
Safety Netting Installation and Load Testing Along Medical Center Way
Protective debris netting is being installed along Medical Center Way and will remain in place through approximately 2028 as vertical construction of the new hospital progresses. In preparation for the structure rising, the project team will conduct a load test of the safety netting system on March 21, 2026. During this test, a worker suspended in a steel basket from one of the project’s tower cranes will drop weighted materials onto the netting to ensure it meets required performance standards. This specialized safety test has been conducted only a limited number of times in the United States.
Impacts and Mitigations | HDH Project
March 2026: Structural steel deliveries expected to begin with flaggers in place to support safe traffic flow.
Protective debris netting installation underway along Medical Center Way and near the existing hospital loading dock; netting expected to remain in place during the building’s steel erection through 2028. Testing of the netting is scheduled for March 21, 2026.
Weekend closures of Medical Center Way will continue; weekday single-lane conditions may occur periodically.
Construction hours for this project include "noisy" work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
Dates and details are subject to change.

Demolition Extended through March as Utility Infrastructure Work Advances
Demolition of the School of Nursing building for the Parnassus Central Campus Site Improvements (PCCSI) project, also known as Parnassus Commons, will continue through the end of March 2026. Demolition was extended due to unforeseen site conditions. Work will proceed carefully to ensure it is completed safely. Noise and vibration are expected to impact the following buildings:
Clinical Sciences Building (CSB)
Health Sciences East and West (HSE and HSW)
Ray and Dagmar Dolby Regeneration Medicine Building (IRM)
Medical Sciences Building (MSB)
Koret Hall (Koret Vision Center)
Possibly other nearby buildings adjacent to Saunders Court.
The project team is coordinating closely with UCSF Facilities Services to identify existing site conditions and utilities as demolition progresses.
Utility infrastructure work is also moving forward. Crews are continuing utility trenching west of the Health Sciences West (HSW) tower toward the Clinical Sciences Building (CSB), with intermittent jackhammering during excavation activities and at a utility yard south of HSW (Hooper Pad).
Intermittent noise from jackhammering rock should be expected in adjacent buildings (Health Sciences West and Clinical Sciences Building) during the utility infrastructure work. This work will occur in varying noise levels rather than the continuous noise associated with earlier demolition activities.
Upcoming work will also include utility shutdowns for the Clinical Sciences Building and Health Sciences West. Facilities Services will communicate utility shutdown information to occupants.
